Gervais-Courtellement was a French photographer who converted to Islam and was one of the first to photograph Mecca’s landmarks. In 1896, he took pictures of 34 holy sites and described Mecca and its inhabitants. This book is of great importance for its illustrations, which were inspired by the photographs taken by the author, and include buildings that have since changed or disappeared.
